Do you ever feel like your thoughts are racing a hundred miles a minute? Or that there’s just too much going on and you can’t find time to breathe? Feeling anxious and overwhelmed may even be affecting your work and relationships. If this sounds familiar, mindfulness-based practices may be for you.

Why Mindfulness?

The thoughts, feelings, and emotions that we experience every day have an effect on our reality. Making adjustments to those daily thoughts, feelings, and emotions can enhance the quality of our lives.

Mindfulness is one tool that can help you learn to recognize and understand your thought and feeling patterns, with the goal of creating new, more effective patterns by purposefully paying attention to the present moment, without judgment or evaluation, and simply noticing the experience as it happens.

Research shows that mindfulness contributes to higher levels of:

  • life satisfaction
  • self-esteem
  • vitality
  • and authenticity.

It has also been associated with lower levels of:

  • stress
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • and anger.

Why Yoga?

Research shows that when we incorporate mindfulness practice into our day-to-day activities, it can help rewire or reshape our brain and improve the quality of our life experiences. Incorporating mindfulness into our daily lives is a challenge that improves with practice. As with any skill, regular practice before and outside of competitive or performance events will improve the delivery of that skill when it counts. Yoga is a perfect place to practice.
Yoga in the park

Yoga provides a reasonably controlled environment where you can gently experience sensations in your body during asana (yoga postures) while observing your breath and thoughts all at once.

In practicing mindful yoga we:

  1. coordinate movement with the breath
  2. pay attention to the sensations in the body as we move
  3. feel the experience without  judgment or expectations, respecting our boundaries
  4. and notice thoughts as they occur and bring them back to breath and body.

We do this with self-compassion and kindness during each session.

According to Harvard Health Publishing of the Harvard School of Medicine, yoga and meditation have been shown to reduce your body’s stress response by strengthening your relaxation response and lowering stress hormones like cortisol.

Researchers have also shown that yoga has many health benefits, including improving heart health and helping relieve depression and anxiety.

Yoga is a low-cost and evidence-based therapy for stress reduction, better sleep and less pain without the side effects of typical medical interventions making it the perfect companion for your mindfulness practice.

Salabhasana yoga Pose

Practicing yoga properly requires the guidance of a qualified teacher. This class does not ask students to rush movements or push limits. We take things slow and gradually allow your body to adjust to new positions and stresses. There are many asanas, or postures and all of them can be modified to fit different body types.

Classes are pre-recorded so you can take as long as you need to learn the movements and no previous yoga experience is needed.

Modules for this Class

Learn to focus your awareness on a specific experience and be fully present with your thoughts, actions, and emotions in each moment.

In this module, you will learn about the two most important building blocks of mindfulness: attention and the present moment.

At the heart of mindfulness is the cultivation of attention to the present moment. The most common reason why people fail to pay attention to the present moment is that they are occupied by thinking, often about the past or the future.

In this session, the role of thoughts and their relationship with the present moment are introduced.

Find out how to recognize automatic patterns in your behaviors so you can respond to situations purposefully and by choice versus reacting unconsciously.

The goal of this session is to clarify the relationship between mindfulness and automaticity.

In this module you will practice paying mindful attention to automatic reactions and routine patterns of thinking and behavior is a powerful way to decrease their impact and make room for choice.

Participants will experience the automatic nature of their thoughts and how these thoughts in turn automatically cause emotions to emerge.

Expand your view and creative thinking by learning to accept common judgments or labels (good or bad, hard or easy, etc.) as part of a larger story.

In this module, “open awareness” is introduced by addressing the evaluative nature of the mind.

While open awareness involves non-judgment, most of our daily awareness is clouded by countless judgments and evaluations.

Simply by becoming aware of our judgments, an important obstacle to open awareness is removed.

In this module, you will learn to experience the judgmental nature of the mind and learn about the problematic aspects of judgments.

Find peace and clarity by embracing life’s changes and unpredictability. Learn skills to help you allow experiences to take their natural course without avoiding or controlling them.

In this module, you will learn how mindfulness promotes an accepting stance towards our life experiences.

Rather than fighting or avoiding experiences, mindfulness requires a willingness to experience them.

Acceptance, however, is a complex and paradoxical construct.

This session will help clarify the essence of acceptance teach you how to apply acceptance to difficult emotions and by explaining the goal of acceptance.

Learn to set goals with a healthy balance between your current state and your desired future with an appreciation for the path you will take to achieve them.

An excessive focus on the future is perhaps one of the most common obstacles to mindful awareness.

The default mode for many people is a task-driven, doing mode, constantly focused on reaching goals and the future.

In this module, mindfulness is introduced as the key to finding a balance between being in the present moment and planning for the future.

Participants will experience the pitfalls of an excessive future focus and explore the benefits of a grateful relationship with the present moment.

Build skills that will help you be gentle and kind to yourself. Build skills that help you accept yourself, as you are, even when life isn’t going the way you want it to.

Rather than a self-compassionate attitude, many people suffer from a non-accepting and self-critical relationship with the self.

The nature of this relationship is perhaps most clearly reflected by the inner critic: an internal voice that criticizes the self.

In this module, participants get to know their inner critic and learn to cultivate a more friendly and caring relationship with the self. You will find ways to increase awareness of your inner critic with techniques to practice self-compassion through meditation and self-caring action.

Learn to strengthen your relationship with yourself and enjoy life without identifying who you are based on your job, possessions, or others in your life.

At the deepest level, mindfulness cultivates a different relationship with ourselves.

In this module, you will develop the ability to observe and step back from your thoughts, including identity-related thoughts. This more objective stance creates room for a more dynamic version of yourself, the observer.

The ever-present observer is aware of the stories about the self, and it is thus by definition different from the stories themselves.

Several exercises allow you to experience the difference between the self as a story and the self as an observer.

Developing mindfulness is a multi-layered process. Combined, these modules provide you with a synergistic approach to achieving mindfulness in your daily life. This module focuses on combining all that you have learned into your own personalized plan for the future.

Mindfulness is multi-faceted and understanding how the different processes work together, can provide essential insight.

This module focuses on integrating the last 7 weeks of material, exercises, and skills.

You will learn how the7 key processes underlying mindfulness connect and create a personal plan for sustainably incorporating mindfulness in your daily lives.
