Play the video above to learn more about this course.

  • Chronic pain is at epidemic proportions all over the world.
  • Over 20% of U.S. adults suffer from chronic pain.
  • Back pain is the 2nd most common reason people see their doctor after the common cold.
  • Over 1.5 million people in the United States suffer from substance use disorders related to prescription opioid pain relievers.

Typical medical interventions for pain are leaving people hopelessly frustrated and overwhelmed. Conflicting recommendations and misinformation about pain often result in poor treatment decisions that are expensive, do not improve pain, and cause suffering unnecessarily.

Why Pain Neuroscience Education?

Research shows that when a person understands how pain works they are able to measurably reduce the intensity of their pain. Scientific advancements in neurophysiology, brain imaging, immunology, psychology, and cellular biology all reveal that you can rewire your brain to heal chronic pain without pills, shots, or surgery.

A holistic approach built on science, the mind-body connection, and social well-being can help you calm and over-sensitive nervous system, create pain-free neural pathways, and heal your chronic pain.

In order to better help people struggling with these issues, we developed the Overcome Chronic Pain With Neuroscience and Yoga course to help patients understand how pain truly works in the body, undo misinformation that exists about chronic pain, and heal naturally.

Why Yoga?

Chronic pain triggers changes in brain structure that are linked to depression, anxiety, and impaired cognitive function. Vast volumes of research show that practicing yoga has the opposite effect on the brain and can relieve chronic pain.

Catherine Bushnell, PhD, is scientific director of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). Catherine and her team research non-pharmacological treatments for pain including yoga and how it affects the brain’s role in perceiving, modifying, and managing pain. In a press release, Bushnell summed up the findings of her research by saying, “Practicing yoga has the opposite effect on the brain as does chronic pain.” Doing yoga regularly can reverse the damaging effect of chronic pain in your brain.

According to Harvard Health Publishing of the Harvard School of Medicine, Yoga can help people with arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraine, low back pain, and many other types of chronic pain conditions. A study published in Annals of Internal Medicine found that among 313 people with chronic low back pain, a weekly yoga class increased mobility more than standard medical care for the condition. Another study published at nearly the same time found that yoga was comparable to standard exercise therapy in relieving chronic low back pain.
Practicing yoga also improved mood and psychosocial well-being.

Practicing yoga properly requires the guidance of a qualified teacher. This class does not ask students to rush movements or push limits. We take things slow and gradually allow your body to adjust to new positions and stresses. There are many asanas, or postures and all of them can be modified to fit different body types. Classes are pre-recorded so you can take as long as you need to learn the movements and no previous yoga experience is needed.

All pain is real and pain is also a normal, human experience. BUT every pain experience is personal and complex.  In modern healthcare, often the individual’s experience of pain is overlooked. Healthcare providers focus on ‘fixing’ the passive patient.

In this course, we will explore, work with, learn from, and validate your own lived pain experience. This class will follow a partnership-based biopsychosocial-spiritual model with YOU as an active and empowered participant at the center of your healing journey.

What You Will Learn

  • Why we feel pain.
  • Why pain sometimes won’t go away long after an injury has healed.
  • How life’s circumstances and emotions can make your pain worse.
  • How to retrain and calm your pain sensing system so you can heal naturally.
  • Steps to reduce the impact of fear on symptoms.
  • Which hormones reduce pain and how to stimulate the production of those feel-good hormones.
  • What foods to avoid and which foods help reduce inflammation.
  • Techniques to build pain-resiliency so that flair ups are no longer a concern.
